Associate Scientist III, Gene Therapy – In Vivo Vector Characterization

Job Description

About This Role

Biogen’s Gene Therapy Accelerator Unit is driving innovation on both technology and drug discovery process fronts to accelerate gene therapies that may one day help transform the way we treat neurological diseases. We are looking for an innovative, enthusiastic, and dedicated scientist to join our team and contribute to the generation of pioneering gene therapies.

You will work independently and with cross-functional teams to support in vivo AAV vector characterization experiments and develop and perform molecular and cell-based assays to characterize AAV vectors in vitro . Your work supports the development of novel therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative, neuroinflammatory, and ophthalmic disorders.

What You’ll Do
  • AAV vector characterization analysis by adapting existing protocols and developing new protocols – including vector DNA biodistribution, in vivo RNA expression assays, genome titer by ddPCR, cell-based functional assays, and protein expression assays
  • Perform small and large animal tissue processing workflows related to DNA and RNA extraction
  • Provide hands-on support for in vivo AAV vector development experiments in small animal models
  • Collaborate extensively with other research units to advance proof-of-concept studies
  • Maintain constant awareness of novel biochemical and biophysical technologies for in vivo characterization
  • Investigate and implement new analytical and bioanalytical technologies
  • Establish SOPs and adapt new protocols from literature
  • Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks, present data to the team, and write study reports

Who You Are

You are passionate about gene therapy research and use your scientific curiosity to drive novel discoveries. You are a forward-thinker, motivated to learn new skills, and are a team-player who strives to make an impact on patients’ lives.

Why Biogen

Our mission to find therapies for neurological and rare diseases is a unique focus within our industry and this shared purpose is what connects us as a team. We work together to overcome obstacles and to follow the science. We are resilient as we strive to make an impact on our patients’ lives and on changing the course of medicine. Together, we pioneer. Together, we thrive.

Required Skills
  • MS or BS in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or related field
  • 3+ years (BS) or 1+ year (MS) of experience in an academic or biotech/pharmaceutical industry setting
  • Hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques (qPCR, ddPCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE, WB, ELISA, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with rodent handling, drug product dosing, and post-mortem sampling procedures.
  • Strong skillset in mammalian cell culture
  • Ability to independently design, execute, and analyze molecular biology experiments

Preferred Skills
  • Experience working in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry setting
  • Hands-on experience with AAV or other gene therapy vectors
  • Previous experience in an analytical development or method development group
  • Hands-on experience with molecular cloning
  • Research experience in neuroscience/neurological disorders
