Scientist I/II, Human Genetics (Statistical Genetics / Genetic Epidemiology)

Job Description

About This Role

In Biogen’s Human Genetics group, statistical geneticists, genetic epidemiologists, and clinical geneticists work together with molecular biologists and clinicians to identify, validate, and prioritize novel drug targets, and advance drug targets toward clinical development. We leverage our understanding of human genetics and genomics, disease biology, and cutting-edge technologies for deeper analysis of pathogenic mechanisms.

We seek a highly collaborative scientist with strong analytical and communication skills to lead genetic studies of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and support Biogen’s MS therapeutic portfolio.

What You’ll Do
  • Leverage human genetic data from Biogen’s clinical trials and MS PATHS for novel research studies
  • Have access to data through Biogen’s investments into biobanks (e.g. UK Biobank, FinnGen) and individual academic collaborators
  • Design and execute innovative research studies
  • Lead analytics for genetic studies of progression in multiple sclerosis
  • Apply a wide array of computational genomic approaches (hands-on analysis)
  • Integrate genetic data with omics datasets, and public/proprietary human molecular evidence
  • Collaborate with the MS PATHS team in Biogen Digital Health, and biologists in the Multiple Sclerosis & Neuroimmunology therapeutic unit

Who You Are

You have a strong analytical background in human genetics and are interested in applying your skills to drive drug discovery.

Why Biogen?

Our mission to find therapies for neurological and rare diseases is a unique focus within our industry and this shared purpose is what connects us as a team. We work together to overcome obstacles and to follow the science. We are resilient as we strive to make an impact on our patients’ lives and on changing the course of medicine. Together, we pioneer. Together, we thrive.

  • Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D. or M.D. degree with a focus on Statistical Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, Human Genetics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of biostatistics & statistical genetics methods
  • Experience analyzing human genetic data (e.g. genotypes, exomes, and/or genomes)
  • Expertise in statistical software & computer programming (e.g., Plink, R, and/or python)

Preferred Skills
  • Strong scientific background in neurology, immunology and/or biology is a plus
  • Experience analyzing longitudinal data and/or quantitative trait loci (QTLs) is desirable
  • Post-Ph.D. experience not required; at least 2 years of post-Ph.D. experience preferred
