About This Role

The Head of Plant Engineering, Pharma is responsible for the engineering support, design, enhancements, and reliability of all facility and utility systems supporting the administration, laboratory, and manufacturing operations at Biogen’s Research Triangle Park (RTP) Pharma manufacturing site. The Plant Engineering team is responsible for supporting and improving utilities and facilities that support GMP operations for oral solid dosage manufacturing, parenteral filling operations, technical development and quality control labs, and oligonucleotide manufacturing. The position will will manage a team of 4 to 7 direct reports.

What You’ll Do
  • Oversee multidisciplinary efforts and change control to design, specify, install, and validate equipment/system modifications and provides engineering technical support for all utilities (including electrical), building management system, and HVAC systems.
  • Direct investigations into equipment failures and implement changes to avoid future occurrences. Manage, coordinate and control all aspects of engineering in order to meet agreed departmental objectives.
  • Develop and implement capital activities. Identify areas for engineering and financial improvement and enable their inception while maintaining an appropriate level of availability and reliability of equipment (Asset Life Cycle Management).
  • Charter, track metrics for, and lead continuous improvement efforts and Reliability-Centered-Maintenance / Equipment Reliability aspects. Create and maintain relationships with other sites to develop and promote best practices. Uphold, define, and monitor safety procedures and safe practices. Ensure the safe and effective introduction of new equipment, capital expenditure and process improvement technologies. Manage and oversee plant engineering studies and Utility systems Master Plan. The incumbent will also lead multi-function teams to implement change and improve on existing processes.
  • Provides Supervision and direction to plant engineering staff with focus on execution and prioritization of daily activities, monitoring performance against goals, career development, and staff recruitment to support plant engineering activities.
  • Develops and maintains focused metrics for all Reliability Centered Maintenance and Equipment Reliability aspects, and precisely tracks / reports the associated savings and efficiency gains. Manages & oversees plant engineering studies (either internal or contracted) and the Utility Systems long term Master Plan
  • Collaborates to develop the maintenance strategy (Reliability Centered Maintenance) and Asset Life Cycle Management for FUME (Facility, Utility, Maintenance, and Equipment) assets and systems – including cross-site communication and consistency.
  • Develops and implements procedures and practices to meet safety, regulatory, and financial requirements and maintain compliance.

Required Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a thorough understanding of mechanical systems and working knowledge of electrical systems.
  • Minimum 10 years of engineering within a plant / process / utility / maintenance function.
  • Ability to provide expertise, advice, and guidance around the operation and enhancements of FUME assets and systems.
  • High level of expertise in plant engineering methods, theory, and principles from a design, construction, and compliance perspective.
  • People management experience with skills leading, developing, and training a diverse team.
  • Practical knowledge and application of GMP and OSHA regulations and experience with regulatory investigations.
  • Practical Knowledge of CMMS systems, Building Management Systems, P&ID’s, and SOP’s.
  • Strong background in Bio-Pharmaceutical maintenance best practices and equipment reliability.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Skills
  • Previous management experience of a technical/engineering function leading, developing, and training a diverse team.
  • 10 years’ experience with plant engineering in a cGMP environment
  • Strong background in Bio-Pharmaceutical maintenance best practices and equipment reliability
