About This Role

The SeniorManager, Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) for Biogen’s Gene Therapy Manufacturing (GTM) Facility at Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC will establish site EHS vision and policy, oversee implementation of the Global EHS Management System and provide subject matter expertise to site senior leadership. Therefore, you will directly report to the general manager (GM) of Gene Therapy and build the EHS structure of this new "start-up" organization of Biogen, being able to utilize the broader Biogen tools and processes.

What You’ll Do

1. Oversees the compiling, updating, and analyzing of GTM EHS programs and data to ensure proper compliance with government regulations and to provide for a safe and healthful workplace, community, and environment.

2. Establish GTM EHS strategies, processes, systems, standards, procedures, compliance reviews, write reports, risk management and metrics to achieve excellent EHS outcomes and performance ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. Will be the primary contact for GTM incident response, incident reports and investigations, environmental permits, reporting, and risk management.

3. Partners with site EHS Leadership to review and interpret current and future GTM EHS demands in connection with business requirements and pending legislation.

4. Defines both short and long term EHS goals and objectives. Successfully teams with site management, manufacturing, engineering, manufacturing sciences, and quality to achieve defined objectives.

5. Owns the Significant Injury and Fatality Prevention program. Directly responsible for designing, implementing, and auditing physical safety programs such as: Process Safety, Lockout tagout, Electrical Safety, Lone work, and Emergency Preparedness. Partners with Industrial Hygiene, Product Stewardship and Sustainability EHS functional leads in designing and auditing programs such as: Radiation Safety, Safe Handling of Potent Compounds, Ergonomics, Wellness, and Office Safety

Required Skills
  • min. 10yearsof environment, health, and safety experience, preferably in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical or other health care industries.
  • Bachelor’s degree in EHS, life sciences, environmental management, environmental engineering or other similar field required​​​
  • Advanced knowledge of EHS Management Systems, technical programs, and legislation, required.
  • Experience in crafting EHS programs aimed at influencing individuals throughout all levels of a major manufacturing site
  • Experience dealing with complex and sensitive issues related to manufacturing of biologics
  • Advanced interpersonal skills focused on collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and communication.

Preferred Skills
  • Prior experience in Gene Therapy Manufacturing Operations such as Plasmid’s safety, suspension Transient Transfection, microbial safety etc. is desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of drug development process with particular emphasis on large scale biologics manufacturing and associated support functions, highly desirable.
  • Experience coaching, developing and managing a staff of professional employees.
  • Professional certification in engineering or EHS related discipline highly desirable
