WGL Helper Mechanic (January 24, 2022 Start Date)

WGL is pleased to announce plans to hire its first Helper Mechanic Class for 2022. You will assist with maintaining and providing safe and reliable gas transportation, supporting crews by performing manual excavation, operating pneumatic tools, and other equipment for the maintenance of gas facilities. Following training, job location may be as assigned at any station within the Washington Gas service area (VA, MD, and/or DC).

You WIll:

  • Assists the lead person and other senior employees to maintain equipment in working order.
  • Work independently but generally works under the direction of a lead person. Operates company vehicles. Work involves rotating shifts in a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation.
  • Responsible for adhering to WG Engineering & Operating standards and all other company policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for personal and job site safety situations.
  • Installs and removes protective barriers (i.e. shoring material).
  • Follow and adhere to company standards as it pertains to proper excavation practices.
  • Load and unload required material.
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Wear respirator while working in gaseous atmosphere or confined space.
  • Operate power tools as needed
  • Excavate company facilities
  • Assist in the performance of regular and scheduled maintenance on company facilities
  • Interpret company records.
  • Stocks and equips company vehicle

Must have:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. (G.E.D.)
  • At least 6 months of experience in auto repair, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, landscaping or other construction field that includes the use of hand tools.
  • Natural Gas experience preferred.
  • 2 years Military experience accepted in lieu of 6 months experience.
  • Must pass Work Keys Test and pre-qualifying written and practical exam(s) as applicable.
  • *Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver's License required. Must meet Company driving standards. Must acquire Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) medical card within 6 months from date hired into position. May be required to use personal vehicle
