Strategic Initiative and Capture Management Lead

In this role you will provide analysis, leadership, and process solutions to develop and support execution of strategic plans, lab-wide strategic efforts, and annual planning agendas for facilities, centers, and major initiatives at Argonne National Laboratory. Other duties include developing and leading outreach strategies to connect internal and external partners to meet the needs of laboratory's initiatives and goals; maximizing outcomes of existing partnerships and nurturing collaborations within laboratory; and supporting and communicating laboratory's core science strengths.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with initiative leaders to develop and articulate laboratory strategy for major science and technology initiatives defined by US Department of Energy (DOE) and other sponsors.

    • Provide guidance on which initiatives offer laboratory best opportunities for success. Provide guidance on which initiatives offer best return on investment of resources.

    • Convert strategy into a plan for opportunity capture and assist with the implementation of that plan.

  • Organize laboratory response to funding opportunities from DOE and other sponsors.

    • Assist initiative leadership in disseminating opportunities inside and outside laboratory, assembling teams with correct experience, identifying and recruiting external partners, etc.

  • Make recommendations on allocation of program development resources.

  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experiences

  • Analytical skills, including problem definition and ability to formulate effective strategic plans.

  • Capture management skills, including determining customer needs and assessing the ability of the organization to meet those needs. Analytical skills to evaluate new business opportunities and determine which opportunities fit best with organizational goals.

  • Communication skills, combined with information collection and presentation abilities, to mobilize organization and move a diverse group of colleagues toward consensus when faced with ambiguous situations.

  • Executive-level skill in verbal and written communication and interpersonal relations.

  • Knowledge of principles of project management and change management.

  • Familiarity with operation of a mission-driven R&D organization.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.

  • Scientific or technical background, i.e., master's degree or equivalent in a scientific or technical field.

These levels of knowledge and skills typically would be achieved through advanced formal education in business, engineering, science, or related field with extensive experience working with senior leadership within and outside the organization.

The selected candidate will be placed in the appropriate level (PA3 or PA4) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

  • PA3: Bachelor's and 4+ years of relevant experience or equivalent

  • PA4: Bachelor's and 6+ years of relevant experience or equivalent.
