Engineering Technical Assistant

In this position, you will be responsible for conducting and coordinating the design and engineering of mechanical equipment to support cutting edge vehicle research. You will oversee and assist in the design, setup and execution of dynamometer and on-road experimental R&D on advanced mobility solutions including conventional and electrified as well as connected and automated vehicles and new mobility modes including drones as well as micro-mobility solutions. You will oversee the set-up, operation and maintenance of chassis dynamometers and associated test equipment. You will manage the maintenance and operation of the emissions measurement equipment and perform independent assignments with limited direction. You may supervise work of non-exempt technicians.

Position Requirements:
  • Knowledge and experience with vehicle performance, powertrain, and communication protocols.
  • Knowledge setting up custom vehicle experiments including electrical and mechanical modifications.
  • Knowledge and experience testing gasoline, hybrid and electric vehicles.
  • Experience in constructing experimental devices.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical engineering principles of vehicle systems including electricity, standard wiring techniques, and electrical safety equipment and standards.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical engineering principals and equipment related to vehicle systems, thermal effects on materials and components (expansion, evaporation, etc.).
  • Knowledge of quality assurance procedures and safety policies and guidelines.
  • Maintain awareness of Laboratory ES&H policies and procedures and works in compliance on a daily basis.
  • Skill in installing, programming and operating data acquisition equipment.
  • Skills in electrical repairs, electrical design, and assembling electrical equipment from scratch.
  • Experience working on high voltage EV systems.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication.
  • Operation of a personal computer and associated office applications.

  • May require working a non-standard schedule to accommodate testing needs, including afternoons and weekends.


Desired Skills:
  • Skill and experience with emissions equipment operation, maintenance and calibrations.
  • E xperience with dynamometers and associated instrumentation.


This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in an Associate's degree or high school &; 5+ years of relevant experience.
