About Us

You will be joining the Research IT team as part of the Innovation & Translation group within Technology & Digital Solutions which provides technology solutions for all of Stanford Medicine. We bridge the three missions of the academic medical center (teaching, research, and clinical care) and advance the effective use of software systems and data for clinical, research, educational, and operational activities.

The Research IT team works on a variety of infrastructure and software applications used at Stanford Medicine and other institutions around the world. Examples include tools for working with clinical data from the hospitals and clinics (STARR clinical data warehouse), monitoring patient health status (CHOIR), and supporting population health studies (MyHeart Counts, Apple Heart Study, our mHealth Platform).

Position Overview

In this role, the Principal Software Engineer will work to make data from our many ancillary clinical systems available for research access. They will collaborate with technical and non-technical teams to obtain access to the data, and act as architect and individual contributor to create any necessary infrastructure and tools. They participate in all aspects of the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and writing design specifications, to implementing, testing, maintaining, operating, and supporting software over time. They have excellent judgment about design tradeoffs, communicate clearly, and collaborate well with non-technical project stakeholders. They often act as technical project manager and present our work to external audiences. They create professional looking, well-edited product collateral and end-user documentation. They have broad and deep technical expertise, work in all layers of the technology stack, and at all levels of abstraction. They provide technical leadership and direction within agile sprint teams and excel at troubleshooting and solving problems when the rest of the team is stumped. They quickly learn and adopt, or invent, whatever technologies are needed to solve the problem at hand.

Preferred qualifications:
•\tOrganized and able to track and manage many data acquisition efforts in parallel
•\tExperience with Microsoft environments (especially SQL Server databases)
•\tSkilled with SQL and relational databases such as BigQuery, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and SQL Server
•\tKnowledge of Windows and Linux servers/VMs
•\tKnowledge of networking and Windows file shares
•\tKnowledge of Google Cloud and Azure
•\tExperience with Java programming
•\tSkilled at creating secure APIs and server-side application code, and building secure web applications
•\tExcellent software engineering skills and testing practices to ensure high quality solutions
•\tExpertise building, deploying and operating systems at scale in the cloud with a strong emphasis on data security

A Brief Overview
The Principal Software Engineer is responsible for building or testing the front-end / back-end / mobile interface for web applications or software tools at Stanford Health Care. This position will collaborate on design issues with a diverse group of product managers, designers, engineers, and infrastructure teams to build and deliver robust front and back end solutions that showcase the SHC's brand while providing a high-quality experience for users. This position should have a complete understand of web development.

What you will do
  • Provide strategic direction on mid to long term technology development inline with SHC's enterprise goals on Performance, Privacy, Security, Availability, Maintainability and User Experience
  • Collaborate with business partners, vendors and developers in defining strategic and tactical solutions;
  • Identify opportunities to improve IT service quality through automation and reduction of process defects;
  • Implement inhouse proof of concept, facilitate technical vendor evaluations and documentation;
  • Share knowledge with technical team and senior management of emerging technology and trends, their implications, challenges and opportunities.
  • Partner with MyHealth, SHC Mobile, UX Design and Internal Web teams;
  • Hands on technical role; contributes and helps set standards for all phases of the software development lifecycle, including analysis, design, implementation, automation and QA
  • Develops functional prototypes from wireframes and mockups, and create proper documentation
  • Develops websites, performs unit testing, implementation, and production application support
  • Participates in troubleshooting problems related to user interaction, webpage performance & mobile web optimization
  • Collaborates with business, functional, technology system and operational owners engineers to refine and improve the user experience
  • Follows industry trends with regard to front-end technologies and techniques

Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
    Master's degree preferred

Experience Qualifications
  • 10+ years of directly related experience.

  • Expert knowledge of front end browser technologies including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/ECMAScript
  • Knowledge of Semantic Markup, AJAX, JSON, and JS libraries (jQuery, YUI, etc)
  • Strong Experience with UI libraries and Front End tools (jQuery, Bootstrap, AngularJS, LessCSS, SASS)
  • Advanced knowledge of HCI, usability, interaction design patterns
  • Proven ability to develop web sites for multiple target devices (mobile, tablet, desktop, etc.)
  • Proven ability to build and ship production-quality software to a large consumer audience
  • Knowledge of front end optimization and performance techniques
  • Knowledge and practiced application of industry best practices in rich web
  • Knowledge of user behavior and interaction design patterns
