Counsel - Investments

Role Value Proposition:

The attorney will join an active Investments Law group in Overland Park, Kansas that assists and advises the MetLife Investment Management Agricultural Finance department in three regional offices (Overland Park, KS, Fresno, CA, Memphis, TN) and two consulting offices (Sao Paulo, Brazil and Mexico City, Mexico) in originating, servicing and managing a diverse agricultural mortgage loan portfolio including farm and ranch, agribusiness and timber assets in the US and Latin America. Specifically, the attorney will provide insightful, timely, and pragmatic counsel on a wide range of legal services in the areas of agricultural mortgage loan production, loan servicing, special servicing, loan sales, and asset management by building collaborative relationships with business partners as well as outside counsel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice and counsel to key business decision makers on the structuring, origination and management of farm and ranch, agribusiness and timber mortgage loans in accordance with applicable law and MetLife policy and protocols.
  • Advise business partners and manage outside counsel on loan originations, drafting and negotiating loan documents, assisting with closing due diligence, and handling all other aspects of a sophisticated agricultural finance group.
  • Work with, guide, and manage outside counsel, representing MetLife Agricultural Finance on loan closings, loan servicing, special servicing, special projects, and litigation.
  • Counsel internal business partners in all aspects of agricultural finance transactions, new product development, and on applicable investment management and insurance regulations.
  • Prepare, initiate, advocate for, and effectively present legal points and recommendations to guide key decision makers and to represent business partners as legal counsel.

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Requires a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; admitted to practice before the Kansas state bar.
  • 3-5 years of morgage transaction experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven business acumen; Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously.

  • Experience with commercial, residential or agricultural mortgage finance transations.
  • Competencies: analytical thinking; problem solving; demonstrated technical and functional expertise; exercises sound judgment; building and working within collaborative partnerships; and negotiation skills.
  • Able to work under limited supervision.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese a plus.
