Compliance Consultant

Job Location: New York, NY and Bridgewater, NJ.


The Corporate Ethics and Compliance Department (CEC) manages the firm's compliance risks to prevent violations of law, rule, or regulation, and designs and delivers a compliance risk management framework that maintains risk levels within the firm's risk appetite and protects the franchise. CEC is a risk-based department, focused on emerging risks, and providing constructive challenge to the business and functions, partnering closely with them to implement strong processes and effective controls, as well as to better foster and embed a culture of compliance. CEC monitors trends and changes in regulations and develops and implements firmwide and divisional policies and procedures.

The Role :

The Compliance Consultant for US Group Business and Financial Wellness and Engagement will be a strategic partner and advisor to MetLife's U.S. Group Benefits business, including MetLife Legal Plans and Pet Insurance, MetLife's Global Employee Benefits business and MetLife's Financial Wellness and Engagement business (collectively, the "Business"). As an individual contributor, the Compliance Consultant will be responsible for compliance coverage for the Business. This role entails working closely and collaborating with the Business and functions on strategic initiatives and emerging issues. In this capacity, this role will be responsible for offering credible challenge, escalation of issues and reporting as appropriate, and working closely with the Business to implement controls and guidelines while ensuring compliance with global and regional policies, procedures and standards, law, rule and regulation. The individual will be required to plan, lead, and execute comprehensive compliance reviews to assess whether MetLife's business controls are operating as intended and effectively mitigating material compliance and regulatory risks and to advise and counsel the business on appropriate remedial measures. This position will also independently manage compliance projects and work directly with business management on various compliance matters as well as other duties as prescribed.

This role will report to the VP and Head of Group Benefits Compliance and will serve a critical senior role on the Group Benefits Compliance team.

  • Reports to: VP and Head of Group Benefits Compliance

  • Key Stakeholders: Direct reports to the Senior Leadership Teams of US Group Benefits and Financial Wellness and Engagement

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manages compliance projects from initial stages through implementation of corrective actions
  • Provides direction to business partners with regard to the impact of laws and regulations, and helps with the development of policies and procedures.
  • Leads compliance reviews of business units' operating practices and administrative procedures to identify areas of potential compliance risk.
  • Identifies, monitors and tests key controls, as prescribed by the annual testing & monitoring plan.
  • Communicates results of compliance reviews to Senior Compliance Managers and Business Leaders.
  • Where necessary, advises the Business on the design and efficacy of appropriate controls and risk mitigation strategies.

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree required;
  • 4+ years of experience in compliance, risk, legal, insurance, financial services.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in complex problem solving and analytical thinking as required
  • Effective Communications Skills
  • Relationship Building Abilities

Preferred :
  • JD, MBA, or CPA a plus;
  • Financial or Insurance industry professional certifications or designations a plus
  • Solid knowledge of compliance testing or audit experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Company operations, systems, and transactions, or Company financial products and services a plus
