Job Description

WGL - Community Engineer

Support Corporate Engineering by managing the information sharing and gathering among community stakeholders related to large pipeline installation and maintenance activities. Address any challenges, questions, or concerns that may arise amongst community leaders, groups, or organizations related to pipeline construction activities so that all pipeline replacement activities can continue as scheduled.

You WIll

  • Develop relationships with various permitting and environmental agencies responsible for approving Washington Gas infrastructure improvement construction projects. Call on these relationships to discuss project details before construction and to reconcile any issues so that projects can move forward as scheduled.
  • In conjunction with Community Involvement Managers , meet with community neighborhood organizations and local community officials to inform them of pending natural gas infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Effectively negotiate with local community organizations to reach agreements
  • In conjunction with Community Involvement Managers, attend community outreach events to promote corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives.
  • Represent Washington Gas in volunteer programs that build relationships with and help improve underserved communities.
  • Develop productive and close working relationships with Engineering, Construction, and Gas Supply. Quickly conceptualize and become knowledgeable of the scope of more extensive natural gas infrastructure improvement projects managed by these departments to represent and support them in community informational events.
  • Attend community information events hosted by other entities whose construction projects may impact our infrastructure and facilities and provide analysis reports of that impact to superiors.
  • In conjunction with project engineers, develop public education and information materials, presentations, and display as needed to support engineering projects - including contributing to newsletters, media/new media outreach, and website content.
  • Maintain current knowledge relating to best practices for community engagement relating to large infrastructure projects.


You Have

  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering, Science or a related technical field
  • 5+ Years of related experience
  • Strong verbal communication and written communication skills required, and a proven ability to effectively collaborate and negotiate contentious issues. Must have the ability to concisely discuss and deliver presentations on key/complex natural gas infrastructure improvement design and construction issues, gain consensus, and bring about change and agreement between WG and other impacted entities.Must demonstrate diplomacy and active listening skills.
  • Ability to proficiently operate information technology for managing data for business decision making, including MS Word, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Visio.
