Job Summary

Leads a team that implements scalable and distributed machine learning applications and other data intensive applications to support advanced data and analytics capabilities, including data management and integration capabilities across WBA. Responsible for managing a team of machine learning engineers.

Job Responsibilities
  • Manages the activities of a staff of machine learning engineers. Responsible for a team that designs and develops complex software that processes, stores and serves data and machine learning models for use by others.
  • Manages the planning, prioritization and execution of ML engineering projects and processes.
  • Plans cross-functional ML delivery to support business needs. Ensures data and application integrity and quality standards
  • Manages and oversees the design and development of complex and large-scale data structures and ML workflows to support machine learning application development, as specified by business needs.
  • Tunes, scales, and optimizes algorithms and machine learning frameworks
  • Ensures that data and machine learning pipelines are scalable, repeatable and secure. Improves data consistency, integrity, Dev Ops and ML Ops.
  • May develop budget for functional area. Manages budget to plan and is responsible for meeting/delivering against budgetary goals and objectives
  • Makes input into specific aspects of the operating plans of the function or unit at the next highest organization level, then based on prevailing conditions, manages the daily operations of assigned section of work
  • Interacts with direct reports and peers in management / customers / vendors to share information and improve cross-departmental processes
  • Stays abreast of industry leading best practices and brings them to the attention of the leadership team for innovative application. May develop partnerships (and relationships) with internal and external stakeholders to meet business needs
  • Allocates available resources to meet operating objectives. Develops and mentors staff through on-boarding, open communication, training and development opportunities and performance management processes; builds and maintains employee morale and motivation; ensures the team is appropriately staffed with required competencies; fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years of experience in machine learning, software engineering, or data engineering; or graduate degree in a technical discipline with at least 2 years of experience in machine learning, software engineering, or data engineering
  • Deep knowledge of SQL
  • Experience programming in at least one of the following: Python, C, C++, Spark, Scala, and/or Java
  • Experience with REST API development
  • Experience establishing and maintaining key relationships with internal (peers, business partners and leadership) and external (business community, clients and vendors) within a matrix organization to develop strategies that meet department goals within budget and timelines
  • Experience analyzing and reporting data in order to identify issues, trends, or exceptions to drive improvement of results and find solutions
  • Experience identifying operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems
  • At least 2 years of experience in indirect management of team members, including assisting in the development, training and assignment of work/projects to other team members.
  • Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience deploying Python applications
  • Experience with Azure application deployment
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams
