UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual (UHC E&I) is seeking a Senior Accountant to join the segment's Controllership team. The Senior Accountant will be an integral part of the E&I Accounting & Reporting team and will support the financial month end close process with a focus on performing unique ACA Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) calculation and analysis. A successful Senior Accountant will demonstrate an ability to understand applicable rules and regulations, drive improvements, support field leadership and other customers through reporting and thoughtful financial analysis. This candidate will have a unique opportunity to contribute to enhancements in the process by leveraging powerful financial tools like SAS Enterprise Guide. Candidate must demonstrate strong communication skills, and an ability to work with large amounts of data while working collaboratively in active partnership with Regulatory Accounting, FP&A, IT and other teams. Primary Responsibilities:
  • Execute on federal MLR rebate and related processes
  • Perform several state MLR rebate calculations and coordinate with Regulatory Accounting to ensure timely and accurate filing
  • Prepare journal entries in accordance with GAAP, account reconciliations and analyses, and footnote support for statutory filings
  • Provide operational and technical accounting expertise to ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, MLR rules, regulations, and laws
  • Maintain internal control structure and procedures for MLR rebates
  • Prepare documentation in support of external and internal audits
  • Collaborate with other functional areas within E&I Finance / Controllership (e.g. Financial Planning & Analysis, Revenue, Medical Reserving, SG&A, Regulatory Accounting) to model the impact of various business initiatives on rebates
  • Participate in training sessions with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and read and understand relevant regulations
  • Analyze updated CMS MLR instructions and help provide recommended changes to business processes based on changes in instructions
  • Analyze the financial performance across entire P&L (Revenue, Medical and SG&A) to understand the drivers of rebates and turn it into a proactive and value-added advice for business owners
  • Act as a mini Controller for a non-integrated business where responsibilities include JE processing, account reconciliations, and results reporting
  • Support various special projects as required

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 1+ years demonstrated progression in financial reporting and analysis
  • Experience successfully managing multiple requests, assessing priorities and achieving solutions under deadlines
  • Intermediate level of working knowledge of GAAP; ability to effectively use accounting knowledge to collaborate with varying levels of employees and senior management to drive sound business decisions
  • Proficient level of capability with Excel and Word

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Healthcare or insurance experience
  • Working knowledge with tools like SmartView, PeopleSoft, SAS
  • Advanced analytical and information gathering skills; ability to evaluate and prioritize extensive detailed data
  • Success with process automation and process improvement
  • Attention to detail and ability to apply critical thinking to resolve issues/questions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $53,300 to $95,100. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $58,800 to $104,600.
