The Analytical and Structural Chemistry (ASC) team within Oncology Medicinal Chemistry is looking for a highly motivated analytical chemist with a strong scientific focus in preparative Separation Sciences. As a key member of this multidisciplinary team you will utilise the technology and expertise to provide innovative analytical solutions to challenging drug discovery problems, in collaboration with colleagues from Chemistry and other disciplines. The ASC laboratory is equipped with modern analytical instrumentation covering most types of capabilities of HPLC, SFC, MS, NMR, etc., and the candidate will be exposed to a wide range of scientific problems.

As a lab-based Separation Scientist, you will operate and maintain LC-MS and SFC systems, carrying out chromatographic separation, identification and quantification of potential drug leads (small molecules and new modalities). As a key project member, your skills in chromatography will enable the team to advance oncology drug discovery projects focused on creating medicines to positively impact patients' lives.

Key responsibilities:
  • Perform RP and/or SFC chromatographic isolation in mg and gram quantities based upon mass- or UV-directed collection in singleton and multiple parallel synthesis formats producing quality results in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Analytical method development to solve separation problems.
  • Biomimetic chromatography data collection, and innovative advancements.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret data, recognize aberrant results, and run follow-up experiments.
  • Implement automation using commercial software, liquid handlers, and other robotics.
  • Champion innovations in chromatographic techniques to optimize current and future business delivery, including development, evaluation and implementation of predictive analytics.
  • Work independently, as well as part of a team, in a matrix organization.
  • Represent the analytical team on high priority oncology projects, coordinating non-routine cross-discipline analytical requests and discussions around potential new methods enablement.
  • Drive improvements for projects and the chemistry department through sharing best practices.
  • Prepare summaries of work for presentations, reports, and patent applications.
  • Publish work in peer reviewed journals and/or present work at external or internal conferences.
  • Stay up to date with literature in analytical chemistry and advances in broader modalities that influence oncology research.
  • Act in accordance with all AstraZeneca policies on personnel, safety/health/environment regulations, best laboratory practice, and Code of Conduct.

  • PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related field or Masters in Chemistry with 5+ years relevant experience, or Bachelors in Chemistry with 7+ years relevant experience obtained in the pharmaceutical and/or chemical industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with chiral and achiral separations at analytical and preparative scale.
  • Experience with the operation of HPLC, UHPLC, SFC, and LC-MS instrumentation, including data interpretation.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and basic repairs of HPLC, UHPLC, SFC, and Biotage solvent dry-down instrumentation.
  • Experience with Waters MassLynx software and Waters purification/preparative instruments is desirable (FractionLynx, Prep100, etc.).
  • Experience with software from ACD/Labs, MGears by Mestrelabs, Elixer iTrax, Green-button-Go, Virscidian, and similar tools a definite plus.
  • Expertise in analytical methods development and validation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are a must.
  • Strong time management skills, forward planning, and delivery focus.
  • Steady performance demonstrating values and behaviors in interpersonal interactions.
