Job Description

Amgen is searching for a Senior Manager of Accounting on its Global Accounting team. The Senior Manager will report to the Executive Director of Global Accounting Operations, and will be located in either Thousand Oaks, CA or Tampa, FL. The ability for a Flexible work arrangement is key in that time onsite is expected on an as needed basis. SoCal or Tampa, FL area with some flexible onsite.

This Senior Manager will lead and manage a team of 3 individuals in the Accounting Consolidations and Master Data Management group, and will manage a team of offshore individuals who support this area through our outsourced vendor Genpact located in Kolkata, India.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:
  • Provide leadership to the team to execute on accounting and reporting activities to complete the month-end/quarter-end accounting close & consolidations process, including the following:
    • Preparation and review of the accounting resolutions, accounting estimates and accounting close packages,
    • Facilitation of monthly and quarterly close review meetings with management, and
    • Execution of financial controls to ensure quality standards and compliance requirements are met.
  • Partner with various groups within and outside of Global Accounting to ensure key processes are executed, including semi-annual balance sheet.
  • Work with accounting management regarding proper application of US GAAP and company policies and procedures.
  • Identify and drive new procedures/processes or modifying existing ones which lead to improved cost effectiveness and/or appropriate quality, compliance, and standardization levels.
  • Provide direction on continuous improvement ideas and initiatives.
  • Serve as lead contact for Corporate External Reporting, Corporate Audit, External Auditors and Tax Compliance to provide audit/reporting support and analysis


What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 2 years of finance or accounting experience


Master's degree and 6 years of finance or accounting experience


Bachelor's degree and 8 years of finance or accounting experience


Associate degree and 10 years of finance or accounting experience


High school diploma / GED and 12 years of finance or accounting experience


2 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience including corporate level public company experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or MBA
  • Audit or Big 4 Public Accounting experience
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Strong US GAAP knowledge and experience across various functional accounting areas
  • Strong written, verbal communication, and presentation skills and be able to bridge culture differences
  • Detail oriented; strong business analytical skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work with a minimum level of direction in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lead projects and work with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage multiple deliverables
  • Proven leadership and management capability, including leading and managing people with different levels of experience and in different locations
  • Team/Contractor supervision experience, including managing the outsource partner team
  • Positive attitude and a strong work ethic
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Experience working with the general ledger system (SAP) and implementing financial systems
  • Industry experience
