About the position
Wirecutter is seeking a staff writer to cover fitness gear and home exercise equipment.
As a staff writer, your core responsibility will be maintaining and growing our extensive catalog of fitness gear reviews. You will test and review products related to fitness and personal health, such as home gym equipment (from treadmills and exercise bikes to resistance bands and adjustable dumbbells), wearables (including fitness trackers and GPS running watches), outdoor exercise gear, workout recovery tools, running shoes, and other athletic apparel. You will pitch and write service-oriented articles about fitness and other health topics. You should be enthusiastic about fitness, personal health, and tech, and dedicated to helping our readers navigate purchases and improve their lives through physical activity.
Our work is research-driven and evidence-based. You will interview medical and industry experts, develop testing plans, and cut through marketing jargon to help readers understand what’s truly important. You will stay on top of health and science news related to fitness, industry and product developments, trends, and evolving reader interests.
You will work closely with our operations team to plan and execute testing in Wirecutter’s Long Island City office, and you must be able to test exercise equipment and other fitness gear in your home.
You will report to a supervising editor and collaborate with other writers and editors covering other personal health-related topics. This role is based out of our office in Long Island City, New York.
Research, report, and write long-form guides and short form posts on fitness gear, home exercise equipment, and wearable tech; think creatively about sources, identify experts, and plan and conduct meaningful short- and long-term tests
Request product samples and process their return
Interview experts and review academic journal articles and other scientific data; methodically scan user reviews and forums to find what truly matters to readers
Collaborate with editors to conceive new content and formats and move ideas from pitch to publish
Collaborate with photo, video, and illustration departments to produce visuals to support guides and blog posts
Work with our community team to respond to reader feedback and questions; work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; work with our operations team on product orders and testing plans
Attend trade shows and product news events as needed to build contacts and expertise in relevant topic areas
Perform related work as assigned
Minimum 2 years of professional writing experience, preferably including reporting on fitness topics or reviewing health or personal care products
Excellent communication and task management skills in a remote work environment; patience to work through multiple rounds of edits and balance multiple reporting projects and deadlines simultaneously
Impeccable research, reporting, and fact-checking skills; ability to understand scientific studies, medical research, and testing data, and to use them to make recommendations and give advice to readers
Strong organization skills and comfort working with large data sets
Experience creating and administering tests for product reviews is a plus
