Job Description

In June 2019, Vertex announced the establishment of a new research site in the Boston area where research, development, and clinical manufacturing for cell and genetic therapies will be primarily based. Cell and genetic therapies represent two rapidly emerging therapeutic modalities with the potential to treat—and even cure—several of the diseases Vertex is focused on, including sickle cell disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and type 1 diabetes. Further investment in a research site specifically designed to advance these programs will be key to Vertex’s continued and sustained leadership in these exciting approaches. At Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT) our research teams will bring together the best biology, technologies and enhanced manufacturing capabilities to ensure we bring these cutting-edge transformative therapies to patients as quickly as possible.

VCGT is seeking a Supervisor to join its growing team. The role will be responsible for development, execution, and oversight of Vertex’s cell therapy development of media and buffer preparation systems and will participate in supporting laboratories in charge of development of advanced cell processing and culture systems. The Supervisor will work closely with the Process Development team as well as Manufacturing and Quality Systems teams to meet program milestones. The position will be based in Boston, MA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement systems to manage and fulfill media and buffer prep requests from the process development team
  • Oversight of a team of individuals involved in routine lab operations such as media prep, buffer prep, inventory of laboratory supplies, and routine maintenance of equipment
  • Support of the team directly in the lab with a hands-on approach to producing, testing, and compiling data related to media and buffer prep
  • Support technology transfer to manufacturing and provide training for GMP production as needed
  • Ability to multi-task to support lab operations and the larger team needs.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field with 5 years of relevant industry experience o a Master’s degree in relevant field with 3 years of relevant industry experience or a PhD in Life Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemical/Biomedical Engineering or related discipline with minimum 1 year of relevant industrial work experience
  • 4+ years minimum experience in a development environment supporting cell culture media and buffer preparation in an industrial environment
  • Prior experience preparing media and buffer at >50L scale
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of scientists, engineers, regulatory specialists and business professionals
  • Working knowledge of GxP and working under regulatory environment
  • Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and routine maintenance required for cell culture supporting equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to handle multiple tasks while meeting timelines and adapting to changing priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills and high attention to details
  • Authorized to legally work in US
