WHAT YOU'LL DO The Pittsburgh Business Management Director functions as the lead business manager for the Pittsburgh office and serves as the "right hand" to the Office Leader. Through leadership of the staffing function, the BMD is responsible for optimizing the deployment of BCG consulting resources to meet the business needs of the office, system and region, while ensuring that each BCG consulting staff member in the office receives the right set of development opportunities throughout his/her career. The BMD will also be closely engaged with resources and leadership from adjacent businesses in Pittsburgh (BCG X, Platinion/TDA) on affiliation, staffing and development to ensure there is a holistic approach to managing office level objectives. Together with the OL, the Mid-Atlantic System Lead and Managing Director and Partners in the office, the BMD manages the full employment life cycle of each member of the BCG non-MDP consulting team. In addition to staffing, these activities include oversight and administration of the professional development processes (career development, career path, training, transition, PTO etc.), affiliation/retention programs, recruiting, pyramid management, and the execution of other programs related to the career and development of the BCG Consulting Team. The BMD helps to ensure that the office has the right number of people with the appropriate and relevant skills required to meet the current and future needs of our business. All of the above will be performed in concert with priorities and objectives of BCG X and Platinion/TDA staff directly affiliated with the office, with a commitment to a “One BCG” mindset. As the most senior member of the Business Services Team (BST) in the office, the BMD is also expected to produce a smooth, day-to-day operation focused on service, excellence and business acumen, and to help build and reinforce a positive, close-knit office culture for all located in Pittsburgh. The BMD is responsible for the general management of the office and for managing the office’s operations and BST employees. The BMD functions, in the broadest sense of the word, as a leader in BCG – in the office, the system and the region. The BMD will provide leverage and support to the OL and Managing Director and Partner group in running the office. The BMD will coordinate and work in concert with counterparts from other offices in the Mid-Atlantic System and the NAMR region. As a member of the NABLT, the BMD will work closely with a wide range of constituents to pilot new programs, drive regional change efforts, coordinate initiatives and to develop, implement, execute and interpret programs and policies related to all local staff. The individual will report directly to the Pittsburgh Office Leader and will have responsibility for championing a OneBCG culture for the ~85 individuals located in the Pittsburgh office. YOU'RE GOOD AT This position will be responsible for coordination across and participation in activities related to the development, mentorship, recruitment and retention of the BCG non-MDP Consulting Team in the Pittsburgh office, as well as general support on these same dimensions for BCG X and Platinion/TDA staff, assuring affiliation across the various business units. 1. Manage professional development of all BCG core consulting staff and provide support/advisory to local BCG X and Platinion/TDA staff Oversee administration of Career Development processes for BCG core consulting staff Manage consistent policies and procedures in line with regional and global guidelines on promotion timing, promotion criteria and termination Oversee mentorship relationships and programs Establish a trusted advisor relationship with professionals at all levels of the organization Ensure delivery of appropriate training programs and opportunities working with the regional L&D team With the regional and global teams, ensure that all BCG consulting staff receive the right learning and development opportunities Support career transition, transfer and mobility and other programs Manage BCG consulting staff compensation processes in line with regional policies Administer all compensation processes including year-end bonus determination and all salary increases in line with regional policies and processes Ensure the effective recruiting of BCG Pittsburgh staff at all levels (entry level and lateral hiring) Together with regional team, oversee recruiting for all levels of the BCG Pittsburgh staff including campus recruiting for entry level positions out of undergraduate and graduate programs, and entry level hiring from less traditional sources (non-MBAs) Manage lateral hiring programs to attract more experienced talent to meet the needs of the business Provide leadership for other people-related initiatives and projects as needed 2. Operate as the primary point person for issues of morale, retention, diversity and inclusion and affiliation Regularly take the pulse on people issues, bringing issues of importance to the OL’s and Managing Directors & Partners’ attention. Recommend changes where warranted and implement programs to ensure continuous improvement. Monitor red zone report, drive PEOPLE survey and pulse check related initiatives and help to facilitate case team best practices Ensure effective Teaming@BCG execution Set agenda for office events in order to foster an environment of collegiality and cohesiveness. Oversee coordination of all office events from small frequent gatherings (eg, office lunches) to larger multi-day office wide events (annual retreats and team building events, holiday parties etc.) Provide thought leadership on developing and implementing initiatives to address people issues 3. Plan for and manage core consulting pyramid to support the business objectives of the office, system and region Together with the Mid-Atlantic system Finance team, accurately forecast staff needs for the business Ensure office growth strategy appropriately incorporates pyramid estimates and considerations 4. Lead office-based Business Services Team (BST) Ensure the efficient and highly effective operations in the office through the management of the local Business Services Team, partnering with regional/global function directors and business unit directors Build a highly effective team by fostering team work (within work groups, across functions and throughout the system and region); develop a strong BST management team; coach direct reports; supervise the coaching of indirect reports Manage local BST career development Manage local BST compensation processes, reporting and communication in concert with regional team 5. Oversee operational infrastructure for the Pittsburgh office Manage or coordinate delivery of support services for office including administrative support, office services, meeting coordination, IT, HR, real estate, etc.in conjunction with regional or global function leadership Working closely with global functions, oversee the provision of a reliable and appropriate technology infrastructure Manage vendor relationships and agreements as required for effective office operations Support development of real estate strategy and facilities management for the office Administer firm-wide, regional and office-specific Human Resources activities and policies Manage office budgeting process to ensure optimized profitability and planning 6. Support Mid-Atlantic system finance function to ensure optimized profitability and planning Provide guidance and counsel for all cost management. Operate in an environment of high service and optimize efficiency and cost management Ensure effective revenue planning and tracking Provide counsel to office management on financial issues. Prepare appropriate ad hoc financial analyses Work in tandem with X and Platinion/TDA leadership and finance teams on appropriate cost structure, tracking and service level agreements for office hosted staff Act as a liaison with the regional staff, Global Services and Regional Controller and Finance staff to comply with requirements for analysis, reporting, planning and to assist in development and implementation of regional initiatives and policies 7. Provide support and counsel to the System Lead, OL and Managing Director & Partners in the office; Support all Office management functions, initiatives and projects Set agenda and manage office communications and events Support OL and System Lead in Market and Client Planning activities for office 8. Represent office on the NABLT and actively support regional initiatives Support regional initiatives designed to improve overall performance in North America Acts as liaison NABLT team to cooperate in the development and implementation of regional policies Participate in regional projects as member of the NABLT 9. Help support Pittsburgh staffing process in concert with counterparts across the system and region Provide broader insight to the OL and MDPs on the state of the business and evolving trends through the lens of staffing Ensure staffing is closely linked to the Career Development processes and to client priorities and is steeped in the BCG cultural values of openness, transparency and balance. We expect that the individual will possess both the technical qualifications for the role as well as other intangible attributes.
