Job Description LiDAR Image Scientist
Position Description: The successful candidate will provide imagery science support specifically related to Light

Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Imagery and provide technical expertise and leadership for product quality (PQ) assurance

activities within the Image Quality and Utility Office (NIQU). The Image Scientist will be responsible for evaluating and

identifying issues with the PQ, data integrity and interoperability of LiDAR data and products as delivered from

dissemination nodes, as it traverses the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG), and as exploited using NSG

tools. The image scientist duties include:
• Analyzing point cloud data to derive intelligence and geospatial information, conducting feature extraction,

characterizing partially obscured objects, and performing change detection to support or extend analysis;
• Developing algorithms and evaluation tools and creating customized LiDAR methodologies to address a variety of

geospatial intelligence problems;
• Coordinating with counterparts across Key Components, mission partners and the IC to conduct enterprise PQ tests

and analyze test results to determine acceptability of products for community consumption;
• Resolving discrepancies during or after testing, present test results verbally or in writing, and participate in

frequent technical exchange meetings
• Developing and maintaining NIQU assessment project schedules and databases;
• Reviewing Requests For Change (RFCs) for requirements accuracy, design, development, and scheduling of

comprehensive quality testing solutions;
• Leading and/or supporting NIQU assessment activity, including assessment projects related to the NSGRequired Education, Experience, & Skills • Possess an active Clearance
• Education: A minimum of 4 years of experience and a Bachelor of Science degree in image science, remote sensing,

earth science, physical science, engineering, or similar engineering/science field
• Experience in applied image processing and scientific analysis of LiDAR imagery, knowledge of image formation, and

spectral phenomenology
• Experience scientifically processing spectral imagery from civil and commercial imaging systems
• Proficiency with techniques, algorithms, and scientific analysis of spectral data processing using RSI ENVI and

Quick Terrain (QT) Modeler/Reader
• Experience with GOTS applications such as FSTK and AGITK is a plus
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and oral presentations, complete tasks in a timely manner with

minimal supervision, and the ability to work cooperatively and effectively as a team member

• Eight years in image science or a closely-related field that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the

tasks associated with this workPreferred Education, Experience, & Skills
Desired Skills:
• Proficiency using ITT ENVI COTS image processing software, ERDAS IMAGINE, MS Office, Windows, and knowledge of

programming languages such as IDL, R, Python. Familiarity with commercial and civil data sources, integration of resulting

data into ArcGIS
• Experience in image science and systems engineering experience with sensor phenomenology of NTM, Airborne, OPIR,

and/or Commercial systems
• Demonstrated understanding of methods used for NTM, Commercial, OPIR, and/or Airborne data collection, processing,

exploitation and dissemination
• Experience in performing formal quality assessments
• Knowledge of NSG tasking, collection, processing, exploitation and dissemination (TCPED) image chain
• Ability to work with imagery and LiDAR analysts in an operational environment
• Understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle to include independent testing and data verification
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
