A postdoctoral position is available in the Functional Nanoscale Heterostructures group of the Materials Science Division (MSD), which aims to understand the novel and emergent behavior in nanoscale ferromagnetic heterostructures. In particular, we seek to understand the transport of magnetic domain walls, magnetic solitons, and skyrmions as a function of applied stimuli (current, magnetic field, temperature). Correlating this behavior with microstructure/composition will enable the local energy landscape of the nanostructures to be determined.

The focus will be on confined heterostructures consisting of van der Waals ferromagnets such as Fe3GeTe2, and multi-layers heterostructures such as heavy Pt/Co/W that exhibit skyrmion behavior. The project will involve use of an electrical probe station, and advanced in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to carry out transport studies. The successful candidate will also be responsible for fabrication of suitable samples using focused ion-beam systems or electron beam lithography. Some amount of modeling and simulation work will also be required.

Position Requirements

  • Considerable experience in understanding magnetic domain behavior in thin film and/or nanostructured materials and advanced TEM such as Lorentz TEM.

  • Strong background in Materials Science or Physics.

  • Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent

  • Familiarity with image processing and simulation software.

  • (Preferred) Experience with nanofabrication, transport measurements, thin film deposition, in-situ TEM transport measurements.
