HJF is seeking a Team Lead/Medical Technologist III to support the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB) located at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to DCB.

The Incumbent will perform serological, molecular, and immunological testing in a College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited laboratory. Will perform standardized procedures in strict accordance with laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs). Will be responsible for preparing and analyzing samples, operation and maintenance of state-of-art instrumentation, and ensuring adherence to all Quality Control procedures in support of clinical diagnostic and clinical research initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs and coordinates serological, molecular, and immunological assays, specimen processing, and rejection in accordance with laboratory SOPs, manufacturer guidelines and CAP/FDA regulations.
  2. Ensures proper documentation of all testing performed including proper data entry of specimen data and testing results into the appropriate databases. Verifies clinical patient results for reporting.
  3. Coordinates and performs validation of new assays, equipment, and materials as required with the DCB QA Manager, DCB Technical Supervisors and Laboratory Manager. Develops, implements, maintains and validates SOPs as required.
  4. Trains staff and ensures competency for all clinical research assays. Provides technical support to technicians as subject matter expert, when necessary.
  5. Performs and documents all weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance on equipment required to perform assigned testing. Maintains and revises SOPs as needed.
  6. Supports international laboratory supply management by tracking inventory, providing troubleshooting communications when necessary, and shipping necessary kits and consumables in accordance with IATA regulations, if necessary based on protocol. Tracks and manages international shipments in support of DCB research protocols as needed.
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required trainings and Lab Leadership meetings.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent laboratory and technical skills. Experience working in a high throughput clinical laboratory environment. Prior experience managing/training a Team performing laboratory testing. Ability to create and edit documents, such as standard operating procedures. Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of accrediting and regulatory agency requirements, federal and state laws, knowledge of laboratory information management and automation, ability to recommend corrective actions and policy changes to correct deficiencies and improve laboratory programs is desirable. ASCP certifications for one of the following: cytology, histology, microbiology, serology-immunology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and/or immunohematology

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Science/Clinical Laboratory Technologist required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: A minimum of 6-8 years of experience required.

Physical Capabilities: Requires lifting materials up to 50 lbs. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current or exposure to chemicals.

Work Environment: This position takes place in a laboratory setting.

Work Arrangement: 100% on-site required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide
input on employee performance evaluations.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
