Job Description

Do you want to be part of a team that brings together drug discovery, innovation, and cell and gene therapy expertise to help patients? The Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR), as the innovation engine of Novartis, focuses on translating early drug discovery projects into innovative medicine. The hematology team at NIBR’s Regenerative Medicine research group in La Jolla is looking for a highly motivated senior scientist to join a team developing innovative, transformative in vivo therapies for Sickle Cell Disease and other hematological disorders. There will be a strong emphasis on the application of novel delivery approaches, and development and application of genome engineering technologies.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• A crucial role in the development of novel therapeutic concepts and will contribute at all stages of a project, from inception, early project validation, optimization, candidate selection and through early clinical development of novel medicines for patients with hematopoietic disorders
• Culturing stem cell lines and establishing in vitro assays for hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells from human and mouse primary sources
• Introducing constructs to modify/engineer stem cells and stem cell lines
• Independently designing, executing, and interpreting experiments
• Collaborating with in vivo pharmacology teams on xenograft and ex vivo studies according to IACUC and NIBR guidelines
• Coordinating and collaborating with other Novartis departments, external academic and business partners, and CROs to conduct research studies
