The Opportunity

As a Director, Product Design you will be responsible for creating the vision for design at Abbott Diabetes Care and building and leading a team to execute towards that vision. You will be a thought leader and teacher for design within the Diabetes Care division, and throughout broader Abbott, and will work closely with designers, product managers, developers and senior leadership to drive innovation through design.

This position requires a proven track record of influencing organizations through product design and design thinking, building design teams, as well as the ability to do hands-on work while leading the team to ship innovative digital health products from inception to launch. Our ideal leader will bring a strong foundation in design strategy, collaboration, and execution.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Create a vision for design at Abbott Diabetes Care
  • Build culture of design thinking into the organization through developing governance, process, capabilities and change management.
  • Clearly articulate strategic design direction for our products, and align direction across marketing and customer experience
  • Educate and influence senior leadership on importance of design vision and direction through inspiring storytelling
  • Build and lead a high-performing team of UX, UI, and product designers
  • Work closely with Product, R&D, Regulatory, Quality, Marketing, and Market Intelligence to define and execute against the product roadmap

Critical Success Indicators:

  • Has successfully built a design team from scratch.
  • Designed and/or led design teams which have created products scaled to millions of users.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Required

  • Bachelors Degree required
  • 10+ years of design experience, with a significant amount in product design
  • Self-starter that is assertive, possesses a high degree of self-confidence and intellectual curiosity, and demonstrates good executive presence
  • Proven ability to use design centered thinking to identify and define unmet business needs, and solve for them
  • Proven experience leading, recruiting, and motivating best-in-class product design teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively influence
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and deliver under aggressive timelines in a dynamic environment
  • Thrives under ambiguous conditions and is highly self-directed
  • High capacity to work collaboratively across multiple functional areas at varying levels of the organization
  • Significant experience in a consumer technology-driven and/or digital health business

Preferred

  • Graduate degree in design, human-computer interaction, psychology, cognitive science, information science, or a related field
  • Experience designing for a health and/or service company or wearable / connected devices
  • Expertise working both in-house leading product design teams and at a design strategy firm/consultancy
  • Experience with human factors engineering and summative testing
