Job Description

General Summary:

Vertex Cell and Gene Therapy (VCGT) is seeking a Senior Scientist with strong hands-on experience developing, qualifying, running, and teaching flow cytometry. This role will establish a flow cytometry core facility at VCGT, providing support for a cross-functional group of scientists across multiple innovative programs from discovery through development. The candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment, be able to troubleshoot and teach, and be committed to developing high-quality flow cytometry and cell sorting experiments.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support and train a cross-functional group of scientists on flow cytometry instrument use, panel design, sample acquisition, troubleshooting, analysis, and interpretation
  • Design and optimize high throughput, high dimensional cell-based assays (phenotypical and functional) with multi-parametric flow-based readouts to support early and late-stage research projects
  • Perform cell sorting experiments and train users on cell sorting techniques
  • Maintain and troubleshoot instruments, including daily QC
  • Advise stakeholders on flow cytometry assay best practices and technical details
  • Stay abreast of flow cytometry innovations and provide guidance on cytometer purchases

Knowledge and Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience operating flow cytometers and sorters, including previous experience working in a flow cytometry core lab or shared resource laboratory
  • Operating expertise with BD flow cytometers and cell sorters including FACSymphony A3 and A5, FACSCelesta, FACSLyric, LSRFortessa X-20, and FACSAria; Life Technology Attune NxT; Sony sorters including MA900, Beckman Coulter MoFlo Astrios sorter, and/or other flow/FACS instrument experience
  • Experience with Amnis Imagestream imaging-based cytometers
  • Experience with Miltenyi AutoMACS and MACS-based sorting techniques
  • Expertise with BD FACSDiva, FlowJo and other flow analysis software
  • Experience characterizing primary human samples, including hematopoietic stem cells, immune cell subsets, beta cells, and/or induced-pluripotent stem cells
  • Experience developing and conducting flow cytometry-based readouts for primary human effector assays
  • Experience designing, running, and analyzing high-dimensional flow panels (10+ colors)

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in molecular and cell biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, or related disciplines and 2-5 years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
  • Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular and cell biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, or related disciplines and 7+ years of relevant employment experience, or
  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular and cell biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, or related disciplines and 9+ years of relevant employment experience
