This position is for the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at the Ascension St. Johns facility in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. St. John’s is a 700+ bed full-service hospital with active residency and fellowship programs and regarded as a destination for specialty care. The successful candidate will fulfill their role as a technical director over all testing within the microbiology department, including bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, and molecular infectious disease detection. This position requires frequent collaborative and consultative work with the infectious disease team, infection prevention, and the medical director, in addition to training and mentorship of pathology residents and infectious disease fellows on Microbiology rotations. The role requires a strong background in Medical and Public Health microbiology. A fellowship in Clinical Microbiology is strongly preferred, and board certification in medical microbiology is required. In addition to technical oversight of the operational departments, the role involves client engagement and support, supervision of quality function staff members, and collaboration with a network of peers at LabCorp sites who perform related testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Foster a world class culture for operational and quality performance

  • Ensure quality of results accuracy for all testing, including personnel and instrument performance

  • Effectively communicate with clients, physicians, pathologists, medical directors, and laboratory staff

  • Project credibility and build rapport with medical doctors and LabCorp clients

  • Consistently provide clients with definitive answers based on technical knowledge or conducted research

  • Attend client meetings, as necessary, to support business development or address customer’s concerns

  • Work in conjunction with LabCorp’s corporate team of Discipline Directors and senior staff from Science and Technology, Supply Chain and National Office of Quality to implement and continuously improve LabCorp’s SOPs, Quality and Service goals

  • Partner with Quality Assurance to ensure continuous compliance with regulatory requirements

  • Guide implementation of new assays and instrumentation

  • Participate in, review, and approve validation studies, providing accurate and timely data

  • Remain current with scientific advances and other clinical literature, offering perspectives on improvements, such as effectiveness of patient report

Requirements:

  • PhD in Life Sciences.

  • ABMM certification or eligibility to sit for the ABMM certification.

  • Fellowship in a Clinical Microbiology program is desired.

  • 1-2 years of related experience is preferred.

  • Depth and breadth of clinical experience understanding validation, quality management, proficiency testing, CLIA standards, and operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Deductive reasoning/analytical skills to achieve resolution to customer inquiries or laboratory opportunities/issues.

  • Influence/leadership skills to work with laboratory staff, developing capabilities and engagement in problem-solving skill development.
