Automation Scientist (Associate Scientist)

An exciting opportunity has arisen at GSK Enzyme Engineering and Biocatalysis group for an automation scientist. The primary focus of this role is to support the discovery and engineering of enzymes for use in research, development and manufacturing. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong molecular biology background, and an interest in automation. The successful candidate would participate in an interdisciplinary team tasked with implementing biocatalytic enzyme process across the pharma portfolio.

The role is fast-paced and dynamic, you will thrive in this environment if you are able to effectively manage multiple priorities, communicate your recommendations clearly and enjoy working in teams.

Key responsibilities:

As an Automation Scientist you will be responsible for hands-on daily lab activities across a wide range of molecular biology-based workflows enabled by automated platforms. Activities include:

  • Support enzyme engineering projects through the development and execution of automated sequencing protocols (PCR, DNA fragmentation, size selection, DNA purification and qPCR)
  • Co-develop novel automation solutions for emerging nucleic acid characterization processes
  • Automation maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Learn new technologies to improve throughput, cost, and reliability with an aim of streamlining workflows
  • Collaborate with teams to provide project level guidance of best practices and strategic options during evolution campaigns, assay development, and broader platform modifications
  • Maintain electronic lab notebook records, including LIMS tracking of all experiment work
  • Generate conclusion reports and present data in team meetings
  • Work through problems logically and apply innovative solutions
  • Use scientific literature and database resources in the execution of project related work

Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Master's degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, Chemistry, or related Life Sciences degree.
  • Minimum 1 year lab experience (basic lab skills)
  • Experience with high throughput assay development, nucleic acid characterization (DNA, RNA, oligos) and other molecular biology techniques

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with NGS sample preparation methods and NGS data analysis workflows
  • Hands-on experience with assay method development and troubleshooting
  • Interest in liquid handling robotics and/or integrated automation platforms
  • Interest and understanding of protein engineering
  • A knowledge of molecular biology techniques and their application is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams, displaying excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and oral), with the ability to liaise with scientists and collaborators at all levels
  • Ability to generate conclusion reports and present data in team meetings
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high throughput assay development, nucleic acid characterization (DNA, RNA, oligos) and other molecular biology techniques
