Job Summary

As a Roku Engineer on the Player-Platform team, you will develop client-side libraries that are used to stream Live, OnDemand, and Recorded content on the most used 3rd party platform in Comcast. It provides a video player that integrates with our streaming app, content protection (DRM) integration, advertisement, emergency alerts, and real-time analytics services. Who does the Roku Engineer work with?

Player-Platform software engineers collaborate with industry experts from many subject areas: software architects, application engineers, big data scientists, and various video streaming technologists. Every day, you will be working on a small scrum team that consists of product owners, software engineers, automation engineers, and quality assurance engineers. You will need to work closely with other technical teams internal and external to Comcast VIPER.

What are some exciting problems you'll be working on?

Comcast manages an enormous number of on-demand videos and thousands of linear channels. To support video playback of all of these different types of content, you will be developing new solutions to support our business as well as improve our customer experience. These features include ad insertion in live assets, thumbnail scrubbing, and instant video startup. You will be working on tangible features that are used by millions of Comcast customers.

Where can you make an impact?

Your code will be responsible for all roku streaming that is done at Comcast. It will be run on customers' devices millions of times a week and will be the primary Comcast product that they get along with. You can help improve our video playback experience by developing the most stable, the highest quality video player in the industry. You'll be working with the brightest minds in Comcast building a video platform that will power Comcast for years to come. You will drive the future of the IP video industry.

What You'll Do:

  • Build clean API's for video playback.

  • Build reusable components and functions.

  • Design and implement end to end components related to video playback.

  • Analyze, optimize, and improve the code base.

  • Contribute BrightScript/BrighterScript code with responsibility for major product features while ensuring standard processes are maintained throughout our project architecture

  • Create iterative and approachable code commits illustrated in well-documented pull requests

  • Design, implement and maintain the appropriate unit, UI, and integration tests

  • Own workflow processes, automations, and integrations

  • Manage workload and organization using agile methodology and project ticketing tools

  • Perform constructive code reviews and collaborate in larger architecture and design discussions

  • Collaborate with platform API colleagues to design and consume network resources for minimal latency and optimal efficiency

  • Mentor and encourage your peer and associate engineers

  • Research, present, and propose novel initiatives that advance our engineering and product goals

  • Work with your colleagues to ensure project turning points and shared objectives are well-planned, transparent, and balanced for the team to achieve

  • Regular and consistent attendance.

What You'll Need:

  • 3+ years Roku application development experience is strongly preferred.

  • 5 years software development experience

  • Extensive production experience in development

  • Strong programming skills, especially in Brightscript

  • Solid understanding of Roku standard processes, principles and patterns

  • Hands on experience in HLS, DASH and video delivery services

  • Working experience in Agile software development using continuous integration and deployment practices

  • Good understanding of OO & functional paradigms

  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively

  • Willingness to mentor and advise other engineering team members

  • Analytical and solving abilities

The VIPER team is an organization within Comcast’s grander Technology Product and Experience organization (TPX) which supports the Product Management, Research & Development, Engineering and Operations for Comcast’s Elite Video Experiences in use by Comcast and Syndicated Partners. We support both legacy QAM Video Delivery and the Next Generation IP Video Platform infrastructure from Content Acquisition to the Player consuming experiences we control the end-to-end Video delivery platforms. These platforms deliver video for live linear, video on-demand and cloud DVR services consumed by more than 20 million customers both in-home and out of home on stb’s, connected tv, mobile and desktop products.

National Pay Range: $78,789.65 USD-$184,663.24 USD

Additional Range: This job can be performed in Colorado, with a Pay Range of $108,335.77 USD - $162,503.65 USD

Comcast intends to offer the selected candidate base pay within this range, dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience.
