HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to AFRRI.

The incumbent assists in the development of medical countermeasures against radiation by providing laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff in the lab of Dr. Vijay Singh. They will perform laboratory research projects using both small and large animal models, including the collection and organization of data, performing biochemical assays from animal sources, making detailed observations about experiments, and providing basic data analysis and interpretation.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs laboratory research projects using both small and large animal models, including the collection and organization of data, performing biochemical assays from animal sources, making detailed observations about experiments, and providing basic data analysis and interpretation. (35%)
  2. Performs various veterinary procedures related to research at animal facilities such as blood and tissue collection, and necropsy. (30%)
  3. Assists in the preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, summaries, and protocols. (10%)
  4. Conducts lab work, maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks. (15%)
  5. Assists with data entry and the maintenance of databases for numerous research projects, ensuring that data is entered in a timely and efficient manner. Ensures that the confidentiality and security of data are maintained. (10%)
  6. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills. Must be capable of handling multiple projects.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or related field required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-2 years of relevant experience required.

Work Environment: Set within a laboratory environment.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
